Middle School The Worst Years of My Life:
*Spoiler Warnings*
Today during independent reading time I read Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life by James Patterson. The story involves a 7th grade student named Rhafe Khatchadorian and his attempts at making friends in school. He decides he is going to become popular by being the first student to break every single rule in the student code of conduct book. He has assigned points for each activity depending on how dangerous it is and he is attempting to score a million pionts by the end of the year. After the first few weeks his plan is working and he is making a name for himself in school. The first question I had while reading this was "How is he going to keep his parents from finding out?" Well, today that question was answered for me because Rhafe's mom finally received a phone call from the school and Rhafe totally got busted. Rhafe realized what affect it was having on his mom when his mother didn't say anything but walked away with tears rolling down her face.
Rhafe has now decided that he is going to go the straight arrow and I predicted right away that probably wouldn't be as easy as he thought and it turns out I was right. The very next day the school bully steals Rhafe's notebook that had all his plans for breaking the rules. Now Rhafe has to pay the bully for his notebook back at $1 per page. This has lead Rhafe back to his rule breaking scheme of selling illegal energy drinks in school.
I am hoping that Rhafe can come out of this situation without making the relationship between with his mother any worse. I know one of the biggested disappointments a parent can have is seeing their child fail at school and fail at behaving appropriately. I am rooting for Rhafe to make friends, but at the same time I don't want it to cost him his relationship with his mother.
